Connecting Generations: How Technology is Enriching Life at Carey Care

At Carey Care, we’re always looking for innovative ways to make the lives of our residents more engaged.  While traditional activities will always hold a special place in our hearts, we’re thrilled to share how modern technology is opening exciting new worlds and experiences for our residents.

Embracing the Digital Age

Gone are the days when technology was seen as something exclusively for the younger generation. We’ve found that our residents are not only curious but often incredibly enthusiastic about exploring what iPads, virtual reality (VR) headsets, and other digital tools have to offer.

A World Through VR

One of our most exciting recent additions has been the introduction of virtual reality. Imagine being able to recreate your childhood hobbies, climb a mountain, drive a car or play sport again… maybe even diving with dolphins – all from the comfort and safety of your armchair! That’s exactly what VR is allowing our residents to do.

We’ve seen incredible reactions of joy and excitement as residents “walk” through familiar landscapes from their past, and wonder as they experience thrilling adventures that they might never have thought possible. It’s a truly immersive experience that stimulates the mind, sparks conversation, and creates wonderful new memories.

The Power of Digital Connections

  • Staying Connected: The tablets, smartphones, using video calls (or ‘face-time’) has become a lifeline for connecting residents with family and friends across the UK and the globe.
  • Cognitive Stimulation: We use apps for brain training, puzzles, and quizzes. These are a fun way to keep minds sharp and encourage friendly competition amongst residents.
  • The Arts and Entertainment: VR is a perfect tool for residents to explore digital libraries, listen to their favourite radio shows or music from their youth, and even take virtual tours of world-famous museums and art galleries.

A Resident’s View

Mr Thomas, a resident who recently tried the VR headset, told us,

“It was marvellous! I could enjoy driving cars once again. It’s much better than just looking at photos from the past, ‘VR’ felt real. The staff here are brilliant for letting us try these things.”

Looking Ahead

At Carey Care, we believe that age should never be a barrier to enjoying the best of what the world has to offer, whether that’s through a window or through a high-tech headset. We are committed to integrating technology thoughtfully into our care plans to ensure our residents continue to live rich, fulfilling, and connected lives.
