Celebrating Over 400 Years of Living History

Celebrating Over 400 Years of Living History: Look Who’s Featured in Kendra Magazine!

At Carey Care, we believe that every day is a gift, but every so often, something truly historic unfolds within our community that leaves us utterly speechless and immensely proud.

We are thrilled and honoured to share that Carey Care has been featured in the latest edition of Kendra magazine! The spotlight shines brightly on a remarkable milestone across our Hill House (Kenley) and Westside (Purley) care homes: four extraordinary ladies who are all celebrating their century milestones this year. Together, Rene, Betty, Aileen, and Margaret represent an astonishing over 400 years of living history, wisdom, and cherished memories shared across our family-run homes. As a family-run business providing an extraordinary home-from-home across Kenley and Purley for decades, we don’t just offer compassionate nursing, dementia, and respite care. We celebrate living legacies.

Four Remarkable Ladies, A Century of Memories

What does it take to reach a century? We pulled back the curtain to share a brief glimpse into their incredible lives, along with their personal secrets to longevity:

Rene’s Story | Born February 1926 (100) • Hill House

The youngest of four, Rene spent her younger years enjoying hairdressing and cake-icing classes. A cherished resident with us since 2020, she fondly remembers playing bowls with her husband. At 100 years young, we can confirm she still boasts Hill House’s best throw!
  • Her secret to a century: “Keep fit, enjoy a happy marriage, and count on a bit of sheer luck.”

Betty’s Story | Born September 1923 (103) • Hill House

Betty fondly remembers childhood holidays in Wiltshire at her grandma’s, calling them the best times of her life. An active girl who loved nothing more than cycling and swimming, she was always looking out for others. Now Carey Care’s eldest resident at 103, she remains as bright and radiant as ever!
  • Her secret to a century: “Keep active, be decent, and live life to the absolute fullest.”

Margaret’s Story | Born August 1926 (100) • Westside

Margaret worked hard through her nurse training in Nottingham and even got completely soaked watching Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation procession in person. Across a whole century, she has witnessed air travel, telephones, and computers completely transform the modern world.
  • Her advice for a long, happy life: “Nurture a happy marriage, eat well, help others, and treat everyone with kindness.”

Aileen’s Story | Born December 1926 (100) • Westside

Growing up in Peckham, young Aileen spent her Saturdays getting on with household chores. She vividly recalls the VE Day pageants along the Thames, popping round to a neighbour’s to watch the 1953 Coronation, and watching humanity land on the moon. Quite unimpressed by today’s gadget-filled world, her proper old-fashioned values remain wonderfully unchanged.
  • Her secret to a century: “Stay natural, avoid processed food, and show respect to others.”

A Culture of Connection and Legacy

Moments like these remind us why we do what we do. Providing a nurturing, safe, and vibrant environment at Hill House and Westside isn’t just about meeting medical and personal needs. It’s about honouring the individuals who shaped the world we live in today. Seeing Rene, Betty, Margaret, and Aileen celebrated in Kendra magazine is a testament to the warmth, laughter, and deep community spirit that defines Carey Care.
