The Heart of Our Home: Person-Centred Care at Carey Care

Home isn’t just a place — it’s the scent of a familiar cup of tea, the song that lifts your spirits on a grey afternoon, and the quiet confidence of knowing your day is yours to shape. At Carey Care, we believe that feeling truly at home is not a luxury; it’s a right. And it’s something every one of our residents deserves from the moment they arrive at one of our homes.

Getting to Know You

Person-centred care begins with a simple but important notion: that no two people are the same. When you or your loved one first visits Hill House or Westside, our team doesn’t just take note of medical needs. We want to know the person behind the care plan — the career they’re proud of, the routines that bring them comfort, and the small preferences that make a big difference…..

How do they take their tea? Are they an early riser, or someone who savours a slow morning? Which chair feels like theirs?

These details aren’t minor. To us, they’re everything.

How do we put Person-Centred Care into practice

Care planning at Carey Care is a living, breathing process. Because we’re a family-run business with Registered Nursing Managers who are on-site every day, we don’t wait for a quarterly review to notice that something has changed. We see it, and we act accordingly. Each resident’s care plan is regularly revisited and adjusted, by people who genuinely know the Resident.

Our activities coordinators take the same approach. Rather than filling a schedule with generic events, they take time to understand what genuinely brings each resident joy — whether that’s a lifelong hobby, an afternoon of live music, or simply a quiet hour in the garden. Meaningful engagement looks different for everyone, and that’s exactly how it should be.

Mealtimes matter too. Our catering team works closely with residents to honour both their nutritional needs and their personal tastes. A favourite dish from childhood, a long-held dietary preference, a particular way they like a dish served — these aren’t special requests; they’re part of how we do things in our Homes.

And when it comes to living spaces, we encourage residents to make their room genuinely their own. Bring that familiar armchair from home and hang family photographs. We offer a range of room sizes — from smaller single suites to deluxe en-suite rooms suitable for a couple — because comfort looks different for everyone.

What We Stand For

For over 70 years, Carey Care has been built on a set of values that our staff carry into every interaction: kindness and empathy, integrity and trust, a deep respect for individuality, and a commitment to always learning and improving. They’re the standard we hold ourselves to every day — in the big decisions and the small ones.

Our goal is straightforward: to create a safe, professional environment where every resident is seen, heard, and respected — not as a patient, but as a person.
