Here at Carey Care Homes, we’re delighted to share the incredible benefits our residents are experiencing through pet therapy! We truly believe that companionship plays a vital role in overall well-being, and animals offer a unique and unconditional love that brings so much joy to the lives of those in our care.
What Exactly Is Pet Therapy?
Pet therapy, or animal-assisted therapy, involves meaningful interactions with trained animals. It’s a fantastic way to provide comfort, ease stress, and boost overall health, and an opportunity for our residents to experience connection with these animals.
The Amazing Benefits We’ve Seen First-Hand:
Reduced Loneliness and Isolation:
Animals offer a comforting presence and a real sense of connection, which helps to combat feelings of loneliness and isolation that can sometimes occur in care home settings.
Improved Mood and Mental Wellbeing:
Interacting with animals has been shown to release endorphins – those wonderful “feel-good” hormones! This can elevate one’s mood and reduce feelings of anxiety and low spirits. Simply stroking a dog or cat can be a calming and soothing experience.
Increased Social Interaction:
Animals can act as a real social catalyst, encouraging interaction and conversation amongst our residents. They provide a shared point of interest and create lovely opportunities for bonding and connection.
Enhanced Physical Health:
Pet therapy can have positive physical benefits too! Spending time with animals can help lower blood pressure, improve cardiovascular health, and even encourage gentle movement while petting.
Stimulation and Engagement:
Animals can stimulate cognitive function and provide a valuable sense of purpose. Even small acts of caring for a pet can provide a feeling of responsibility and help to keep residents engaged.
The Power of Touch and Sensory Engagement:
Beyond the emotional and physical benefits, interacting with animals offers valuable sensory stimulation. For many residents, particularly those with reduced mobility or sensory processing challenges, the act of petting a dog’s soft fur, or feeling the gentle rhythm of a cat’s purr can be incredibly therapeutic. This tactile interaction can boost sensory awareness in the fingers and hands, helping to maintain dexterity, whilst providing a comforting and grounding experience. The varied textures and warmth of an animal can reawaken senses and provide a stimulating yet calming feeling.
A Touch of Home:
Pet therapy can bring back cherished memories and provide a comforting link to a resident’s past life experiences.
Our Dedicated Pet Therapy Programme:
We’re fully committed to providing a safe and enriching pet therapy experience for everyone. We’re delighted to work with fantastic organisations such as Lap Pets and Ponies for Kingswood Shetlands & Friends, as well as PAT Dogs.
We’re so proud of the positive impact pet therapy has on our residents and look forward to continuing to offer this wonderful program at our Care Homes!
